Tim Ritchings is a Professor of Intelligent Systems. I was Head of the School of Computing, Science and Engineering at the University of Salford from 2006-2011, after being Head of Computer Science for 3 years. Prior to joining Salford in 2001 as a Reader in Computer Science, I was a Senior Lecturer in Computation at UMIST.
I was educated and the University of Manchester, receiving 1st class BSc (Hons) in Physics in 1972, followed by a PhD in Radio-astronomy in 1976.
My research interests are related to the development and evaluation of novel Intelligent Systems that involve the digital signals and images, using Pattern Recognition, AI and Visualisation techniques to help in their interpretation and understanding of the data. My focus has been on effective and reliable systems that address significant real-world issues, and has been principally concerned with biomedical applications. Recent key projects include: objective computer-based techniques to monitor and assess the quality of a patient’s voice following treatment for cancer of the larynx; the automated registration of time-separated retinopathy images for monitoring the progression of glaucoma and diabetes, the real-time prediction of Blood Glucose Levels in diabetics, and tendon tracking in ultra-sound images. My work has been published in over 30 journals articles and Chapters in books and more than 60 referred conferences and I have supervised over 20 PhD students. In recent years I have been on Programme committees for International Conferences and Workshops in Italy (MAVEBA’99 ’01 ’03 ‘05), Malaysia (CITA'01 ’03 ’05, ‘07, ‘13), and the UK (IEEE-ITAB’03) and (IEEE-MEDVIZ’04). In addition to being awarded ESPRC research grants, he has received British Council (CICHE) funding for links related to “Advanced Teaching and Training Methods for GIS applications”, with UNIMAS, Malaysia, and "Advanced Teaching and Training Methods in the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for Environmental Planning and Healthcare Support", with ERI & IRI, Egypt.
I am a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered IT Professional; and a Fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Computer Society; and a Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
